This is a Kindergarten lesson in the subject of Language Arts. For this lesson, I will be reading The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, and then teaching my students about the different parts of a story, specifically the characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. I will be using different types of technology in this lesson, like YouTube and PowToon. I will also be using Rubistar to make a rubric to grade the students final product.
1. Standards
W.K.2. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic
W.K.3. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened
W.K.8. With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experience or gather information from provided sources to answer a question
SL.K.2. Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood
2. Objectives
The students will listen to a read aloud of Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat.
The students will watch a clip on YouTube to learn the parts of a story.
The students will be rewriting The Cat in the Hat in their own words, using the information that they learned about the parts of a story.
3. Overview
To begin the lesson, I will gather the student to the rug and read The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. Then, to confirm their understanding of the story, I will ask the students to tell me different parts of the story.
I will then inform the students that there are several parts of the story that are very important: the characters (who the story is about), the setting (where the story takes place), the beginning (the first part of the story), the middle (where the problem takes place), and the end (how the problem is solved).
To help the students gain a better understanding of the story, I will show them a short video on YouTube which is a song about the different parts of a story. Below is the YouTube video.
The students will then be given two different work sheets that I have created on Microsoft Word, one for drawing the characters and the setting of The Cat in the Hat, and the other for writing, in complete sentences, the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Below are the worksheets.
I will then split up the class into five different groups to complete the worksheets. The students will be placed in groups to work together to either draw or write the different parts of the story in the worksheets. This worksheet will be a type of formal assessment which will be graded. I have attached the rubric to grade the worksheets below.
After the students have complete the worksheet, I will collect them. To close the lesson, the students will watch a PowToon video that I have made which reviews the parts of a story. Below is the PowToon.
